I have traveled quite a bit, but I am approaching my first solo trip. Your tip about location sharing on Google is helpful. My Spanish is still fledgling and I had been traveling with someone who had more Spanish. I know I will come out of this next trip with stronger Spanish and more self reliance.

Thanks so much! I definitely learned a lot through the process of putting this together. Planning your airport transfer is a detail that is REALLY easy to overlook, so I’m glad you mentioned it. I actually wrote about that to my email list. I think it’s one of the most stressful moments of travel, and it’s when we’re at our most vulnerable (tired, confused), so having a plan is key. Fortunately, I’ve never had anything bad happen myself (thankfully) but I’ve certainly wasted a lot of money on expensive shuttles, which is another good reason to plan ahead!

I actually think I’m going to pick up a rubber doorstop for my next trip because I rarely stay anywhere with a chair sturdy enough to keep out an intruder. I also thought the location sharing tip is really saavy! I try to always share, at the very least, the addresses of my accommodation with my parents before I leave on a trip. If I were to add anything (although some of the bloggers sort of touched on this), I would say have a plan for how you’re going to get from the airport, bus station, whatever to your accommodation. That way you don’t potentially make yourself a target by looking lost. Really great tips, Janine! I think there’s something here every traveler, no matter how long they’ve been at it, can take away!
